If I had a magic wand I would wave it over all those who hate and all thoese who are afraid and I would open there eyes to the beauty in the truth that all that is good in this life comes from trust in each other and our commonness not our precived differences. We all evoleved form the same primal goo, why must we insist in silly things like nationalism and religion to separate us? What a wonderful place this would be if we could all just except that we all started out as goo!

I am a unabashed liberal, not unlike many of our forefathers, and I am as frustrated as anyone by the seeming lack of progress on our issues, but a word of to caution my progressive brothers and sisters, before we abandoned our President and our leaders in the House and Senate, may I remind you that the extreme right wing did not get where they are overnight. They were very deliberate in their means of bringing the American people to their current comfort level (delusional as they may be) in regards to workers, race, and justice in this country. We can not expect to turn this around overnight. We must not let the perfect be the enemy of the the good! Be strong, be united, be true! And above all remember that this is the “Great American Experiment” We may lose! But truth is with us! Remember who the real enemies are!!!

The Virtues of Faith?

Merriam-Webster describes Faith (transitive verb) as a firm belief in something for which there is no proof (2): complete trust.

My question is does faith perpetuate long held beliefs that fly in the face of reason, and if so, how is that different from superstition? I mean no disrespect to “people of faith” but I must admit some confusion when I hear faith championed as a virtue. Throughout history acts of unspeakable horror have been perpetrated in the name of faith. Human sacrifices to gods of every description may seem like distant echos of ancient human existence, but it has not been that long since christians were thrown to the beasts for entertainment in the arenas of Rome for not having faith in the Roman gods. It has not been that long since the crusaders killed thousands for not sharing their faith in Christianity. When people of reason and science dared question the cannons of christianity and their geocentric view of the earth they were persecuted and many were killed for teaching heliocentric views, some were burned alive for blasphemy. No virtue there. When people of faith look at bones of creatures scientifically dated to be millions of years old and dismiss them as “Tricks of Satan” I see no virtue there.

My point is that I feel blind faith has caused much of the pain and injustice in this world. If your able to except on faith alone the teaching of a book written by multiple authors and revised countless times, that is full of inconstancies and factual errors and scientifically impossible stories, is it any big deal to except slavery as’ God’s plan’? If I except on faith that science is only reliable as long as it does not contradict my interpretation of the Bible and I believe the earth is only six thousand years old, then how can I support the teaching of geology or evolution in public schools? If I except on faith that “God hates gays” how can I support civil rights for them? If my faith tells me that I have the truth and only those who agree with me and conform to my beliefs are worthy of eternal life, why should I value those who don’t?

I would not seek to limit anyone’s right to believe anything they choose to, but if anyone seeks to limit my freedom or my choices based on their “faith”, then we have a problem.

Patriot or Terrorist

Town hall meeting on health care reform all across this land are being disrupted by an astroturf movement made up of a mop of uninformed idiots, stoked by lies and hatred by groups who have no love of this country, who just want to make sure no one gets the facts that might actually shed light on this complex issue. To shout "just say no" every time someone asks a serious question or a representative tries to give a serious answer is not dissent, but merely mob behavior. Do not misunderstand me on this very important point, I believe strongly in not only the right of dissent, but the responsibility of every citizen to stand and express their points of view and work hard to head the ship of state on a course they believe in. It is the very nature of our system of government, and we lose if we don't stay informed and engaged on the issues that face us all. But where is value in staying willfully uniformed? Where is the chance to make informed choices if the truth is drowned out? My complaint with these disrupters is not with their passion nor their misplaced beliefs, nor even that they are being used by Corp. fat cats to stop legislation that will benefit all americans. My issue with them is that they believe that the very act of a discussion on the issues is wrong, that we should not hear any voice but theirs. We know where they stand "JUST SAY NO" to anything that any democrat proposes, especially if he is black! There lies the real heart of the beast, not patriotism, but bigotry fueled by the nonstop hate speech spewing forth from the radio and television and the Internet 24/7. When Rush and Beck and all the rest of the Faux news liars and those of their ilk openly call for violence against this President and other liberal leaders, then say, "Only kidding" we know who they are aiming these comments to, the nut jobs out their like Timothy McVeigh. No patriot wants to stifle debate, and no terrorist wants it. If you seek to disrupt because your argument is weak, or if your prejudices are so strong that you threaten violence, you are no patriot, you are a mere terrorist!

What the Hell is a Well Regulated Malitia

Amendment 2 - Right to Bear Arms. Ratified 12/15/1791. Note

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

I am sure in that 1791 after just gaining independence and with only a army reduced in strength to 800 men, to protect settlers and fight Indian wars in the Northwest Territory ;and without a standing army for the protection of this uncertain union of heretofore separate states, it makes sense that we would not want to impede the well regulated ready guards from these states. Having no armories, it makes sense not to infringe on the ability of that well regulated ready guard to quickly rally and arm it’s self.

But as I sit here today, looking at the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines, as well as the National Guard, and as I watch as we fight two wars and deploy troops around the globe, I can’t help but wonder what will regulated militia are these NRA gun nuts members of? Surely no well regulated militia outside of the official branches of the military is needed.

I don’t advocate taking any law abiding citizen's gun away, but to resist any effort to make us all safer from gun violence by registration and licensing guns is not, in my opinion, infringement.
